Jayhawk Battalion (Army ROTC) News

The battalion had a very busy summer this year, with 22 cadets attending the national Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Washington.  Every one of them performed superbly, and  brought great credit upon the unit and their respective universities.  In addition to camp,  we had three cadets attend the Parachutist's Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, one cadet  conduct a Nurse Summer Training program, one cadet participate in a Pentagon  internship program, and eight cadets conduct Troop Leadership training with units across  the Army, including Korea and Germany.  All have learned much in their summer and are looking forward to sharing their experiences with the younger cadets this fall.  We commissioned two new lieutenants over the summer, Aaron Boal (Armor) and Jeff Steinlage (Signal).  Cadet LTC Robert Chamberlain leads a very fine command and staff  team this fall semester.  Our first drill was held 23 August and, in addition to welcoming  the newly arrived cadets and introducing them to their uniforms and the intricacies of D&C, we conducted an awards ceremony to recognize cadet excellence over the summer.

Air Force & Navy ROTC Units Supporting KU Open House (Sat, 6 Oct 2001)

The University of Kansas will be holding their 1st Open House, Saturday, Oct. 6th, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The Air Force & Navy ROTC units will be out in full force with an "encampment" on the grassy area east of Allen Field House. (The Army ROTC has a field exercise that weekend.)  Cadets will demonstrate marching maneuvers and be available to give visitors marching lessons/tips. Cadets and staff will offer face painting--either in traditional camouflage colors or designs featuring red, white, and blue. There will be free snacks to anyone who visits the area, along with information or a representative to discuss becoming a commissioned officer through the ROTC program. The regular ROTC programs are located on campus in the Military Science Building.

The
National Guard will set up a MASH unit on campus.  Nearly every department and building will be participating, with many interesting demonstrations, lectures, tours, music, food, and a parade.  It should be a great way to spend a Saturday and support our military at the same time.
