Maj. Brian De Toy

The Jayhawk battalion commissioned 10 new lieutenants at a ceremony on 20 May. They joined two others who commissioned in December; and an additional six will commission this summer, for a grand total of 18 superb new officers this year.

This summer we have 15 cadets at Ft Lewis, Washington attending the National Advanced Leadership Camp, along with two cadre members. Another three cadets and one cadre are at the Leaders Training Course at Ft Knox, Kentucky. Four cadets will earn their Paratrooper wings this summer, and one will get his Air Assault wings. Four of our cadets

are studying overseas this summer -- in Australia, Britain, and France.

We have doubled our national scholarships for the incoming freshmen class to 15, and have over 25 new cadets joining this fall. We also welcome three new cadre members: CPT Whelan, MSG Butler, and SFC Williams. The program is doing very well and we appreciate the tremendous support from the community.

Capt. James Cooper, USN

JUNE 2002 SCUTTLEBUTT

Summer school is in session and we have a handful of battalion members attending classes. Most midshipmen are either on cruise or preparing for cruise. Captain Cooper leaves for a six-week assignment as Officer in Charge of CORTRAMID West midshipmen summer training in San Diego on 27 June. We wish him a successful and safe summer. Additionally, Lt. Keehn is in  Naples, Italy, handling the myriad responsibilities as Midshipman Embarkation Officer for the Sixth Fleet.

We are detailing plans for our annual summer Orientation  and Indoctrination program, a five-day training program that will take place at Camp Crowder, Missouri, from 14-18 August. The midshipmen are doing a great job planning this while awaiting the return of Gunnery Sergeant Harrison, who is currently in Quantico, Virginia, helping conduct Bulldog training for all the Marines and Marine Options.

We would also like to welcome Major Mark Strole as the new Marine Officer Instructor (MOI). He is a recent  graduate from the Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS. He will officially assume the duties as the Battalion Advisor on July 1st.

Captain Bill Howell, the current MOI, will depart this summer for his next assignment as the Branch Head, Marine Corps Forces Reserve, Defense Finance Accounting Service Center in Kansas City, MO. Captain Howell has done an outstanding job during his tenure as the MOI. The Battalion has benefited from his leadership and experience. He will be missed by the entire Battalion. Good luck to Captain Howell in his new assignment, fair winds and following seas.

Storekeeper First Class Eric Goblirsch joins the staff from duty aboard USS DETROIT (AOE-4), home-ported at Earle, New Jersey, taking over as our Supply Manager. We're all pleased to have him join the staff and assume charge of budgeting and inventory control!

As always, we take advantage of the summer to wrap up long-term projects.

The Staff at the KUNROTC Battalion wishes all a great and safe summer.

GO NAVY!
