JAYHAWK FALL GOLF CLASSIC

NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT

Participation was up 50% this year in the Jayhawk Fall Golf Classic at Alvamar.

Winners in the Senior Division were Floyd Gehrt, Irv Hodges and John Mosher. The Super Senior title was taken by Buck Newsom, Shirley & John Halladay. "Closest to the pin" was John Mosher and the long drive went to John Halladay.

The Nominating Committee, composed of John Halladay, Max Lucas, Jerry Nossaman and Stan Sneegas, proposes the following slate of elected officers for the Jayhawk Chapter TROA for 2003:

On 26 September, LTC Gordon Longabach was made a distinguished member of the 5th Field Artillery Regiment for his work as President of the 5th F. A. Association and Director of the 1st Infantry Division Society. The citation was presented by the Commanding General at a parade at Fort Riley MG Clay Comfort was an invited guest.

TROA LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

10-01-02) TROA Members Approve Name Change. It's official. The Retired Officers Association will change its name to Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) on January 1, 2003.

Issue 1: White House Seeks to Block Concurrent Receipt. Unfortunately, the administration remains adamantly opposed to concurrent receipt, and has upped the rhetoric in recent weeks. Administration officials (presumably, the Office of Management and Budget and other officials in the Executive Office of the President) and others are pressing the House leadership to block either the Senate (full concurrent receipt) or House (partial concurrent receipt) provisions.

 

The DoD argument that retired pay and disability compensation are "two pays for the same event" is simply not true. Military retired pay is earned for a career of arduous service in uniform, whereas veterans' disability compensation is for pain, suffering and loss of future earnings potential due to a service-connected disability. A retiree shouldn't have to forfeit part or all of his or her earned retired pay for also incurring a service-connected disability.

Issue 2: Veterans Benefits Legislation Update. In the House, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID), Chairman of the Veterans' Benefits Subcommittee, is sponsoring a bill (H.R.5235) that would authorize a new compensation system for former POWs. H.R.5235 would establish a three-tiered special monthly payment. Under Simpson's legislation, (continued on Page 4)
