We have had a great semester so far in the Jayhawk Battalion! We have about 85 cadets in the program this term, up significantly from last year's fall enrollment. The incoming freshman class is superbly talented, athletically and academically. Their leadership potential is enormous. I know we can all be proud of the type of young Americans joining the military.

We have had a busy term thus far, culminating in a very successful Fall Field Training Exercise in early October. The seniors put together and run the training and are learning a lot of the responsibilities of platoon leaders in that regard. Last week we took our Ranger Challenge team to Camp Dodge, Iowa, and finished 6th out of 14 teams. While not bad, the cadets have set their sights higher for next year.

We welcomed three new faculty members this fall, CPT Cheryl Whelan teaches the freshmen, MSG Eric Butler is my NCOIC, and SFC Mark Williams is the Operations NCO. All have already made tremendous contributions to the program. The NCOs, especially, are tremendous role models for the future lieutenants.

Following the Tri-Service Military Ball on 1 November, our next major event is the Fall Awards ceremony on Thursday, 12 December. This will occur on our Drill Deck at 1430 hours. All are welcome to attend this event and the cadet change of command which immediately follows.

The fall semester is in full swing, and while academics are, as always, our main focus, the Midshipmen are involved in a myriad of activities. We welcomed LT Kevin Coughlin to the staff, who transferred from USS NIMITZ as our Junior, Senior and Officer Candidate advisor.

The season’s first social event was the annual Barn Dance, held at Shirk’s Barn, north of town. This event is a good opportunity for the members of the Battalion to catch up on sea stories and to welcome the freshmen, who, as always, put on a great Orientation & Indoctrination skit! Captain Cooper commented this was the best barn dance in four years!

The Jayhawk football team has had a slow start, but the Naval ROTC Color Guard continues to perform flawlessly. They presented the colors during the pre-game ceremony at the KU vs. Bowling Green (Parents’ Day) game. As always, they looked sharp and represented the unit well. On Sunday after this game, the Battalion cleaned Memorial stadium as

a Battalion fundraiser. Additionally, a Battalion Field Meet was held in late September with each squad competing against each other. Although it rained the entire meet, the Midshipmen had a great time watching each other fall to the ground during the Dizzy-Izzy.

The University of Kansas NROTC Drill, Riffle/Pistol and Sail Teams will all head to the University of Wisconsin to compete in an omnibus weekend competition on October 26th. It will be the first meet for all three teams. Results in next month’s Scuttlebutt.

Lastly, and most importantly, we at the KUNROTC shared a moment of silence in a formation at morning colors on September 11th to remember whose who tragically lost their lives a year ago. We continue to strive for excellence in the Battalion so we may defend our freedom when asked to do so.
