Air Force News

  Col. Mike Lee, USAF

Jayhawk AFROTC cadets are making their way back to KU after a very eventful summer. The Wing members attending summer Field Training did an excellent job and the majority of them finished in the top half of their classes. Although still waiting to sit down and swap "war stories", we've already heard tales of dog fighting in F-16s and soaring high over the Rockies in fragile...but nimble, sail planes. Our upperclassmen will return to a Wing that will be 10-15% larger than last year due to an excellent year of quality recruiting under Col Kevin McNellis. The Wing will add a large new Freshman class, approximately twenty-one of whom received National AFROTC scholarships. In addition, the quality program run by the cadets at KU, and the vast career opportunities offered by the Air Force have attracted several sophomores and juniors as well. KU nominated twelve cadets eligible for rated (Pilot Navigator slots) duties to the Spring AFROTC Categorization Board, and all 12 were selected for flying training; 6 pilot and 6 Navigator slots. With the tough competition for these allocations, the Jayhawks selected have reason to be proud and they can now get used to wearing the familiar and comfortable "green bag" (flight suit) throughout excellent aviation careers.

DET 280 looks forward to a busy fall with annual regrouping requirements, open house activities at the University, football game color guard duties, stadium cleanup and Veteran's Day activities. The Cadet Wing Staff will have their hands full! We appreciate the ongoing support and close ties with the TROA, especially the Jayhawk Chapter. Our goal will continue to be building and graduating the best 2Lts in the United States Air Force. Note from the new Commander I appreciate the efforts of Col McNellis in building and handing over a great detachment. He will be missed.....but I know how to get hold of him!! Khris and I look forward to our association with the Jayhawks at KU and with the TROA.

Col. Mike Lee
