JAYHAWK CHAPTER NEWS

REMEMBRANCES

Jane Lucas

Charles Baer

Our thoughts and prayers are with Max Lucas in the loss of his wife of 45 years, Jane, on 28 January 2003. She was born in St. Joseph, MO on 14 Oct 1936, the daughter of Thornton Michael and Frances (Welden) Vaughn. Jane taught drama and English for 16 years at Perry-Lecompton High School and was twice Teacher of the Year. She taught freshman English at KU for four years and was a substitute teacher for USD 497 after she retired. Jane is also survived by three daughters. We will miss her smiling face in our Chapter.

Our condolences also go out to Mary Baer in the loss of Charles "Cub", 84, on 20 February 2003. Charles was born 17 July 1918 in Topeka, the son of Charles J. and Arline (Neff) Baer. He served in the Field Artillery during WWII and was the first WWII veteran to join the KU faculty, where he became a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department in 1964. He authored or co-authored three engineering textbooks, one of which was reprinted in Japan. After retiring in 1983, he assisted in writing a history of KU's School of Engineering.
