Jayhawk Chapter
MOAA Newsletter

This newsletter is published by the Jayhawk Chapter of Kansas, Military Officers Association of America, as a service to all members.  The Jayhawk emblem is used with the permission of the registered trademark owner, the University of Kansas.  Publication is made at bimonthly intervals.  The newsletter is only as good as the material available, so each member is requested to forward news and other items of interest to the editor or one of the service editors.

October Speaker:
Our October speaker will be a presentation by Coast Guard Captain Richard Rooth and Captain-Select Brian Marvin of the Coast Guard Personnel Service Center in Topeka. They will discuss the Department of Homeland Security and how the Coast Guard works within the new department

by Stanley Sneegas

Dear Fellow Jayhawk Chapter Members,

I encourage you to participate in the political process that we swore to protect and defend when we were commissioned. MOAA nationally and locally has identified issues that need your and your spouses support. Through the years they have identified issues of equitable treatment of officers and others that were or could be cured through the political process. Local issues included equitable treatment od retired pay and state taxation. National issues have lately included equitable treatment of retirement pay and disability pay for the military members versus Federal civilian members and equitable payments to military spouses under the Survivor Benefit Plan (SRP). We are not asking for anything over and above, but we do ask that we be treated equitably with our civilian counterparts.

These issues like TRICARE for Life can be resolved through the political process. In that process - numbers matter. Your and your spouse's letters, phone calls and emails count. Our elected leaders keep track of how many people contact them about the issues they must decide. Therefore, whenever an issue is identified that you care about, please contact your elected representatives and let them know what you think. This next year, with the upcoming election, is a great time to let your thoughts be heard.

Even you officers in the Jayhawk Chapter are interested in your opinions. Therefore, I have included a membership questionnaire in this newsletter. Please return the completed questionnaire to me or hand it in at the October meeting.

Regards,
