Navy & Marine Corps News

Capt James Cooper, USN & Capt Bill Howell, USMC

The Spring 2001 semester closed with the Battalion earning an outstanding cumulative GPA of 3.11.  Mentally and physically, our midshipmen continue to lead the way at KU.  We are very proud of the Battalion and its efforts.

Summer school is in session and we have a handful of the battalion members attending classes.  Most of our midshipmen are either on cruise or preparing for cruise.  Captain Cooper leaves for a six-week assignment as Officer in Charge of CORTRAMID West midshipman summer training in San Diego on 28 June.  We wish him a successful and safe summer.

We are detailing plans for our annual summer Orientation and Indoctrination program, a five-day training program that will take place at Camp Clark, Missouri from 15-19 August.  The midshipmen are doing a great job planning this while awaiting the return of GySgt Harrison, who is currently in Quantico, Virginia helping conduct Bulldog training for all the Marines and Marine Options.

Our Student Records Manager has accepted a literal and figurative "step up" to work for the Army ROTC on the 3rd floor of the Military Science Building.  Ms. Jenny Pastrano, the wife of a retired Marine Master Sergeant, will be starting in her new position on July 2.  Her superb efforts will be missed.

As always, we take advantage of the summer to wrap up long-term projects.  Work on the Military Science Building is nearing completion with the addition of new lights, ceiling panels and doors to comply with the American Disabilities Act.  A new curb has also been laid in the parking lot.  The "Bulldog" room has also seen some work and will be ready for the new freshman on August 15.

Thanks to a midshipman webmaster, our website has been recently renovated.  If you have not visited it lately, please take a peek.  The latest Seahawk Journal and Scuttlebutt are now posted, along with other numerous other additions and improvements.  Go to

The Staff at the KUNROTC Battalion wishes all a great and safe summer.
