Best wishes to all from the Jayhawk Battalion! We have had a great Winter and are looking forward to an outstanding Spring here on the Hill. Our 70(+) cadets are doing well in the classroom, beating KU general, athletic, and Greek grade point averages. We have set a higher mark and they are working hard towards achieving it.

Recently, one of our cadets, junior Adam Tritsch, was selected as one of only two cadets in the entire nation to participate in the Army Science Board for 2003. He attended a three day symposium in DC last month and will do two three week stints this summer, the first in San Diego and the second again in DC. We are very proud of this young Topekan!

Our intramural basketball team recently returned from Notre Dame's 19th annual ROTC tournament. We did not do

as well this year as last, going 1-2, but did manage to beat the other Big 12 school in our division (Iowa State Air Force). All in all it was a great trip for the cadets and they got a guided tour from yours truly of my alma mater!

Our busy spring will see us outside most every Thursday for leadership lab in preparation of the juniors heading out to Ft Lewis, Washington, for camp. In addition, we will have a battalion FTX in April at Ft. Leavenworth. In late April, on Saturday the 26th, we will again host the Best Ranger Buddy Team competition. Last year we had over 170 competitors from 21 schools in 9 states! It is a fantastic event and we hope some of you can come out and enjoy the day with us. JAYHAWKS LEAD THE WAY!

We held the Awards ceremony recognizing those Midshipmen who excelled in the Fall 2002 Semester: Midshipman 4/C Katrina Hansen received the Professor of Naval Science (PNS) Spirit Award; Midshipman 4/C Robert Archer received a PNS CNET scholarship; and Midshipmen 4/C Scott Chaussee, 3/C Abraham Sipe (Marine Option), and 3/C Tyson Scott (Marine Option) received Rugee Endowment Scholarships. Additionally, Midshipman 3/C Scott received a two-year CNET scholarship. The Battalion as a whole is performing admirably.

We had a former PNS, KU NROTC retired Navy Captain Newsom as a guest speaker at Navy Lab. He shared his personal reflections from a diary he kept aboard a destroyer during WWII. His experience, grace and sage advice will benefit the Midshipmen in their future Naval careers. It was an honor to host Captain Newsom and share moments with a true veteran.

The Drill Team has spent numerous hours preparing for the upcoming trip to Tulane University for a national

drill meet. As they did back in October of 2002, they plan on bringing back the 1st place trophy. The Commanding Officer from the USS Topeka will visit the Battalion on March 5th.

Gunnery Sergeant Edgar Amadis is on deck busy receiving a turn over from the current Assistant Marine Officer Instructor. His wife Amanda, and three boys arrive soon from a three year tour in Hawaii. Gunnery Sergeant Amadis is also busy becoming acclimatized to Kansas' winter weather.

Lastly, we bid fair winds and following seas to LT Corey Applebee, his wife Stacey, and their newborn son Colin. LT Applebee has been an integral part of the NROTC team. His experience, can-do attitude and leadership will be missed. He will attend Department Head School in Rhode Island. Upon graduation, he will be assigned to a frigate in Mayport.
